Phil Spencer Provides Update on Ongoing Acquisition Endeavors for Activision Blizzard

In a recent Xbox panel discussion titled “What’s Next for Gaming,” Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, shed light on the progress of Microsoft’s protracted journey to acquire Activision Blizzard. 

With the gaming industry eagerly anticipating updates on the acquisition, Spencer shared valuable insights into the ongoing process.

Reflecting on the venture, Spencer acknowledged the significant duration of the endeavor, stating, “It has been a lengthy journey. When we embarked on this path, some of us here, over 18 months ago, contemplated our strategic direction and how we could enhance our capabilities. The acquisition of Activision Blizzard King has proven to be a genuinely enlightening experience for me, in the best possible way.”

Drawing attention to the extensive efforts invested by key Xbox figures, Spencer commended the contributions of Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios, and Sarah Bond, the corporate vice president. He emphasized their dedication to leading, strategizing, and diligently evaluating their position.

Highlighting the global scale of the acquisition, Spencer mentioned that the deal had received approval from approximately 40 countries. Currently, Microsoft is actively engaged in securing permissions from two remaining countries, which represent the final regulatory hurdle.

Spencer reaffirmed Microsoft’s unwavering commitment to the acquisition, particularly emphasizing the potential Activision Blizzard King possesses in the mobile and PC gaming sectors. 

By expanding their portfolio, Spencer believes the addition will facilitate reaching and engaging more players. He emphasized the significance of the financial investment, acknowledging the colossal figure of $70 billion.

Expressing confidence in Microsoft’s dedication, Spencer emphasized ongoing efforts to address concerns raised by regulatory authorities. Microsoft aims to find solutions that satisfy the regulators collaboratively. 

Spencer praised the collaboration between Brad Smith, the company’s chief counsel, and Sarah Bond, who actively engaging with regulators to identify these solutions.

Spencer highlighted the successful resolution achieved with the European Commission [1], expressing optimism that similar outcomes could be achieved with other regulatory bodies. Acknowledging the time and focused efforts required, Spencer conveyed his confidence in ultimately overcoming the remaining challenges.

The intentions of Xbox to acquire Activision Blizzard were initially announced in January 2022, but the acquisition process has faced several hurdles since then. Despite the complexities and prolonged nature of the process, Microsoft remains resolute in its commitment to the acquisition, driven by the belief in the tremendous potential it holds for its gaming portfolio.
