In a surprising turn of events, the Overwatch 2 development team has announced substantial changes that will impact the notorious snipers, Widowmaker and Hanzo, in the upcoming Season 5 update.
The lethal one-shot potential of these heroes has long been a cause of frustration for many Overwatch 2 players. However, it seems that their dominance is about to be curbed significantly.
Game Director Aaron Keller took to the official Overwatch 2 blog to shed light on the alterations planned for Season 5, with a particular focus on addressing the overwhelming power of snipers.
The developers intend to tackle the issue by reducing the occurrence of one-shot kills in the game. They will achieve this through a series of hero nerfs and adjustments to certain maps notorious for facilitating extreme sightlines.
Keller revealed, “Widowmaker’s damage falloff will be adjusted from 70-100 meters to 40-60 meters. The damage falloff scalar will see an increase from 30% to 50%. While she will still retain the ability to eliminate 200 health heroes with a single shot within a range of 50 meters or less, beyond that, it will no longer result in a fatal blow.”
BLIZZARD Hanzo, the master archer, is also set to receive changes that will impact his one-shot potential. In the upcoming update, Hanzo will no longer be capable of instantly eliminating heroes with a health pool of 250 HP.
This adjustment is expected to favor heroes like Reaper and Mei in their matchups against Hanzo. Additionally, Sonic Arrow, one of Hanzo’s abilities, will now be more easily identifiable by the enemy team.
Keller concluded the discussion by emphasizing that the development team will continue to evaluate the role of snipers in Overwatch 2 and their impact on the overall health of the game. This suggests that further nerfs and changes may be on the horizon.
As the community eagerly awaits the implementation of these adjustments for Widowmaker and Hanzo, it remains to be seen how these changes will reshape the game’s meta in Season 5. Players hope that these modifications will successfully curtail the dominance of snipers and create a more balanced gameplay experience.
